Have a peaceful day!

Welcome to my new blog home!

I hope you will enjoy reading and conversing with me! There will be discussions of fiber and sustainable living which leaves the field for subjects pretty wide open!

Those of you who have come over from my old blog, Kitty’s Fiber Journey, know that I am passionately comitted to the Knit-a-Square organisation. In my first challenge that ended on June 1st,  we collected an amazing 616 squares!

I am here to challenge to you again! Each blanket given to a child, who has been made an orphan by the combined ravages of Aids and poverty, takes 35 squares. I would love for us to make 20 blankets to warm 20 beautiful children who, literally, have nothing.

20 blankets  means  700 squares

Sound ambitious? Yes, but I know that together we can do this, and, there is more!

One of the big problems for Ronda who is responsable for KAS (i.e. does all the work with the help of wonderful volonteers!) in South Africa, is customs. The rules seem to be quite arbitrary and even when we write “charity /no commercial value” on our packages they can be opened and Ronda can be charged duty fees. Last year KAS was extremely lucky that the British clothing company, Jigsaw, offered to ship squares to South Africa. Unfortunatley, when the boxes arrived the customs officer demanded an exorbitant fee that Ronda could not pay. A wonderful woman named Kareemah Thomas of Thomhuizen Freight CC in South Africa, came to  Ronda’s aid and the packages were released free of charge!

Ronda and the Jigsaw parcels.

Kareemah is also helping Ronda acheive an “importer” status for KAS which will help her avoid future problems in customs with our packages. Ronda would love to have our help to thank Kareemah for her kindness and generosity. She sponsors her own charity that provides soccer coaching for disadvantaged  children near Crown Mines in the South of Johannesburg, their ages range from 2-16. When asked what we could do in return for all the help she has given KAS, Kareemah said she would love to have 600 red & white beanies. I would love for our contribution to be 100 hats!

So, will you please help us?

If you don’t knit or crochet, you can still help! Please spread the word. Talk about KAS at work, school, in your religious and other community groups. One of the most important things we can do is to get more people involved.

Please “Like” the KAS Facebook page!
